Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Globalization has led to increased interaction between nations, including the harmonization of legal and ethical standards in various sectors. In the media industry, global media laws significantly influence local broadcasting practices, shaping ethical standards, content production, and dissemination. For Nigerian broadcasting, global frameworks such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and UNESCO’s guidelines on media ethics provide benchmarks for fairness, accuracy, and impartiality (Ahmed & Bala, 2024). However, local socio-cultural and political factors often complicate the adoption and implementation of these standards, particularly in regions like Yola North Local Government Area, Adamawa State. This study explores the influence of global media laws on Nigerian broadcasting ethics, focusing on how these laws shape ethical practices and the challenges faced in aligning global standards with local realities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
While global media laws aim to standardize ethical practices across nations, their influence on Nigerian broadcasting ethics is often limited by contextual factors such as political interference, cultural diversity, and resource constraints (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). Broadcasters in Yola North struggle to balance adherence to global standards with the demands of local audiences and stakeholders, leading to ethical dilemmas and inconsistencies in content delivery. This study seeks to investigate the influence of global media laws on Nigerian broadcasting ethics in Yola North, addressing the challenges and proposing strategies for harmonizing global and local standards.

By focusing on Yola North, the research provides insights into the practical challenges of integrating global norms into local broadcasting practices. The findings will benefit broadcasters, regulators, and policymakers by offering recommendations for ethical compliance in a globalized media environment.
